How to Choose the Right Power Supply for Your Build

The power supply isn't the most exciting part of a build, but getting it wrong causes problems with everything else.

It's tempting to treat the power supply as an afterthought, but it's the component every other part of your build depends on — getting it right avoids instability, noise, and the need to replace it later.

1

Add up your components' power draw

Your graphics card and processor are the two biggest power consumers by far. Most manufacturers list a recommended power supply wattage for graphics cards specifically — start there.

2

Leave headroom, not just the minimum

Running a power supply near its maximum capacity constantly is less efficient and leaves no room for future upgrades. A unit rated comfortably above your calculated need is worth the extra cost.

3

Check the efficiency rating

Power supplies are rated on an efficiency scale. A higher rating means less wasted energy as heat, which can also mean quieter operation.

4

Don't skimp on brand reliability

The power supply is one part of a build where cutting corners is the most likely to cause instability or damage to other components — it's worth researching reputable brands rather than choosing on price alone.

5

Plan for future upgrades

If you think you might upgrade your graphics card down the line, sizing your power supply with that in mind now saves you from replacing it again later.

If you're not sure how to calculate what you need, that's exactly the kind of question worth asking before you buy parts — we're happy to help you land on the right power supply for your build and budget.
