Keyboard or Mouse Not Working? Troubleshooting Steps

Before assuming a dead peripheral, rule out the port, cable, and a few easy settings.

A keyboard or mouse that suddenly stops responding is usually a connection or driver issue rather than a dead device, and it's one of the faster problems to rule out.

1

Try a different USB port

Ports can fail individually, especially ones on the front of a case or on a hub. Plugging directly into a rear motherboard port is the most reliable test.

2

Check wireless receiver placement

Wireless keyboards and mice can lose connection if their USB receiver is blocked by a metal case or too far away — move it to a more open port if needed.

3

Replace the batteries

It sounds obvious, but low batteries in a wireless device can cause intermittent or laggy behavior well before they die completely, which is easy to mistake for a bigger problem.

4

Test on another PC

If you have access to another computer, plugging the keyboard or mouse in there quickly confirms whether the device itself works, narrowing the problem down to your PC.

5

Check for a stuck software setting

Filter keys, sticky keys, or a disabled input device in your system settings can make a perfectly working keyboard or mouse seem broken.

If a device doesn't work on a different port and doesn't work on another PC either, the device itself has likely failed. If it works fine elsewhere, the issue is on your PC's side — often a driver or a failing port.
