PCs make some noise normally — fans spinning, drives working — but certain sounds are worth paying attention to, since they often show up before a component actually fails.
Clicking or grinding
A repeated clicking or grinding sound is a classic warning sign from a mechanical hard drive that may be failing. Back up your data immediately if you hear this.
Loud whining or buzzing
A high-pitched whine, especially under load, often comes from the power supply or graphics card's electrical components rather than a moving part, and can be worth having checked.
Rattling
A rattle that comes and goes with vibration is frequently a loose screw, cable, or fan blade rather than a serious fault — open the case and check for anything loose before assuming the worst.
Fan grinding or scraping
A fan that grinds or scrapes rather than spinning smoothly usually has worn-out bearings and will eventually fail completely. Replacing the fan before it dies prevents a heat-related shutdown later.
A sudden change from normal
Any noise that's new and wasn't there before is more significant than a noise that's always been present — trust a sudden change over a longstanding quirk.
Clicking or grinding from a drive is the noise to take most seriously — back up your data right away. For anything else that persists, it's worth having the source identified before a fan or drive fails completely.
