PC Randomly Restarts or Crashes? Common Causes

Random restarts are frustrating to diagnose because they rarely happen on command. Here's where to start looking.

Random restarts and crashes are some of the hardest PC problems to pin down, because they don't happen predictably. Working through the most common causes in order saves a lot of guesswork.

1

Check your temperatures

Overheating is one of the most common causes of random restarts, since many systems shut down automatically to protect themselves. Free monitoring tools can show your CPU and GPU temperatures under load.

2

Update your graphics drivers

Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers are a frequent cause of crashes, especially during gaming or video playback. Reinstalling the latest driver often resolves this.

3

Test your RAM

Faulty memory is a classic cause of random crashes and restarts. Most operating systems include a built-in memory diagnostic tool that can test for errors overnight.

4

Consider your power supply

An aging or undersized power supply can cause random shutdowns under load, especially if you've added components since it was installed. This is easy to overlook since the PSU rarely gets blamed first.

5

Check system logs

Crash logs often point to a specific driver or hardware component as the cause, which can save significant troubleshooting time compared to guessing.

If temperatures look normal, drivers are current, and RAM tests clean, the power supply or motherboard are the next most likely suspects — and at that point, a professional diagnosis is usually faster than continuing to swap parts.
