A PC that boots as far as the manufacturer logo and then freezes — never reaching the login screen — is failing somewhere in the startup process before the operating system even takes over.
Give it more time than feels reasonable
A pending update or disk check can genuinely take much longer than expected, especially on an older hard drive. Give it 20-30 minutes before assuming it's actually stuck.
Force a restart and try again
Hold the power button to force a shutdown, wait a few seconds, and power back on. Sometimes a single failed boot attempt is a fluke rather than a persistent issue.
Disconnect recently added hardware
If you recently installed new RAM, a drive, or another component, disconnect it and see if the PC boots normally without it — this narrows down whether new hardware is the cause.
Try to boot into BIOS/UEFI
If you can access your BIOS setup screen (usually by pressing a key like Delete or F2 right after powering on) but not get past it, that confirms the hardware itself is functioning and points to a software or boot configuration issue.
Try a repair or recovery boot
Most operating systems include automatic repair tools accessible from a recovery drive or installation media that can fix common boot problems without erasing your files.
If you can't reach BIOS at all, or a repair boot doesn't resolve it, the issue may be a failing drive or deeper hardware fault, and it's worth having it diagnosed before attempting a full reinstall.
