Why Is My Phone Overheating?

Occasional warmth is normal. Here's how to tell the difference between everyday heat and a real problem.

Phones naturally warm up during heavy use — that's normal. The question is whether the heat is expected or a sign something's wrong.

1

Consider what you're doing with it

Gaming, GPS navigation, video recording, and fast charging are the most common causes of normal warmth. If the heat lines up with heavy use and fades once you stop, that's expected behavior, not a fault.

2

Get it out of direct sunlight

Phones heat up fast in direct sun or a hot car, and the battery management system will often throttle performance or show a temperature warning as a safety measure.

3

Close background apps

Apps running in the background — especially ones using GPS, camera, or constant data — can keep the processor working even when you're not actively using the phone.

4

Check for a stuck update or sync

A stalled software update, cloud backup, or app download can pin the processor at high usage for a long time. Restarting the phone usually clears this.

5

Watch for heat with no clear cause

If your phone gets hot while sitting idle, or heat is paired with fast battery drain or a swollen back panel, that's a sign the battery itself may be failing.

Occasional warmth during heavy use is normal. Heat that shows up at random, doesn't go away, or comes with a battery that's ballooning or draining fast is worth having checked out.
