How to Preserve Your Phone's Battery Health

Simple daily habits that slow down battery wear and help your phone hold a charge longer — no replacement required (yet).

Every phone battery wears down a little more with each charge cycle — that's just chemistry, and no habit will stop it entirely. But how you charge and use your phone day to day makes a real difference in how long it takes to notice. A little care now can mean another year or two before you need a replacement.

Here are the habits that actually move the needle, without turning your phone into a chore to use.

1

Keep it between 20% and 80% when you can

Lithium-ion batteries wear out faster at the very top and very bottom of a charge. You don't need to obsess over it, but regularly topping off to 100% or running all the way down to 0% adds extra stress over time. If your phone supports an optimized or adaptive charging feature, turning it on lets the phone learn your routine and finish charging to 100% right before you usually unplug it.

2

Avoid heat more than anything else

Heat is the single biggest factor in long-term battery wear — more than charging habits. Don't leave your phone in a hot car, direct sunlight, or under a pillow while charging. If it feels warm while charging, especially with a thick case on, take the case off or switch to a lower-power charger.

3

Be mindful with fast charging and wireless charging

Fast charging and wireless charging both generate more heat than a standard wired charger. They're convenient and fine to use day-to-day, but if you're charging overnight anyway, a slower charger puts less thermal stress on the battery.

4

Don't let it sit at 0% for long periods

A battery that sits fully drained for days or weeks can degrade faster and, in rare cases, drop into a state it struggles to recover from. If you're not using a device for a while, charge it to around 50% before storing it, and check on it every few months.

5

Keep your software up to date

Phone manufacturers regularly ship power management and battery health improvements in software updates. Staying current means your phone is managing charge cycles as efficiently as its hardware allows.

6

Watch your battery health percentage

Most phones let you check battery health in settings (Battery Health on iPhone, Battery settings on Android). This number reflects how much capacity your battery has lost compared to new. It's normal for it to slowly decline — the question is when it starts affecting how you actually use your phone.

When it's time for a replacement

Good habits slow down battery wear, but every battery eventually needs replacing. If your phone shuts down unexpectedly above 0%, drains noticeably faster than it used to, feels warm or swollen, or reports a battery health well below 100%, it's a good time to get it looked at. Most phone batteries are swapped out in under an hour.
