A screen that won't respond to your taps — or reacts to touches you never made — is one of the more frustrating phone problems, because it can make the phone hard to even troubleshoot.
Clean the screen and your hands
Moisture, screen protectors, and dirty or wet fingers can all interfere with touch sensitivity. Wipe the screen down and dry your hands before assuming it's a hardware fault.
Remove the screen protector
A cracked, bubbled, or low-quality screen protector is a surprisingly common cause of ghost touching and dead zones. Peel it off and test the screen directly.
Force restart the phone
Touchscreen issues are sometimes a software glitch rather than a hardware fault, and a forced restart clears temporary state that can cause erratic touch behavior.
Check while charging
Some phones experience ghost touching specifically while plugged in, which usually points to a grounding issue with the charger or cable rather than the screen itself. Try a different charger to test.
Look for a pattern in the dead zones
If certain areas of the screen never respond no matter what you do, that points to physical damage to the digitizer — the layer that senses touch — even if the display underneath still looks fine.
If cleaning, removing the screen protector, and restarting don't help, and you're seeing consistent dead zones or ghost touches, the touch digitizer has likely been damaged and the screen will need to be replaced.
